DemokraTEA-Time: 20 years of commitment to cultural diversity
For two decades, the eco-artist from Karlsruhe has been using used tea bags as the basis for her artistic work. To mark this 20th anniversary, Quartier Zukunft is presenting a new exhibition in the Zukunftsraum: “DemokraTEA-Time.” From May 10 to 31, 2026, various works by Renate Helene Schweizer will be on display. A supporting program focusing on democracy will accompany the art weeks.

The principles of sustainability, the careful use of natural resources, and respect for human dignity are central themes in the art of Renate Helene Schweizer. In her zero-waste projects, she brings together political, democratical, social, ecological, and artistic-aesthetic aspects. For about 20 years, the artist has been working with used tea bags sent to her from all over the world, creating new works of art from them.
International Paper Art in the Zukunftsraum
In addition to her involvement with Foodsharing and artists4future, Schweizer has also been campaigning against racism and discrimination for many years. The new exhibition “DemokraTEA-Time” thus takes a close look at our society and how we live together: What is the state of our coexistence, our planet, and our democracy?
Visitors are invited to engage in encounters, exchange and dialogue: What does it take to build a strong community? What is our societal contribution to democracy? What responsibilities do we bear as individuals?
“An open, democratic society is the most challenging of all societies, because it demands the courage to take personal responsibility, imagination, creativity, (self-)reflection, and active participation – every single day,” says the artist.
Nationwide Days of Action to Diversity and Democracy
Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the German Foundation for Civic Engagement and Volunteering are calling for a nationwide day of participation across Germany on May 23, 2026, to mark the anniversary of the Basic Law. On this day, people are invited to roll up their sleeves, work together, advocate for the common good, and foster social cohesion – and thus celebrate the Day of the Basic Law. “DemokraTEA-Time” will take place from May 10 to 31, 2026, as part of this year’s Basic Law “Day of Honor” and the day of diversity on May 21.
