“Quartier Zukunft – Labor Stadt”is a real-world lab at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Its goal is to work with residents, city administration, policymakers, businesses, and local associations and organizations to initiate, test, and exemplify the transition toward greater sustainability. To this end, Karlsruhe’s Oststadt serves as a model experimental space for future-oriented solutions. The Quartier Zukunft research team supports, coordinates, and guides sustainability activities in the neighborhood through scientific inquiry. More info in the video

Sustainability experiments take place in a real-world lab. Here, researchers and local stakeholders work closely together to initiate, test, and promote sustainable development and a culture of sustainability. The project area for Quartier Zukunft is Karlsruhe’s Oststadt. In addition to its proximity to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the diversity and complexity of community life in the neighborhood are key factors: urbanistically and spatially, the area features a wide variety of structures. People from diverse backgrounds and with varied lifestyles come together here. Karlsruhe’s Oststadt becomes a dense microcosm that makes complex interrelationships and big questions manageable on a small scale.

The “Future Space for Sustainability and Science” (in German Zukunftsraum) is located in the heart of Karlsruhe’s Oststadt and serves as a meeting place, gathering spot, and workshop for everyone from the worlds of academia and practice.
