What is the Quartier Zukunft?
“Quartier Zukunft – Labor Stadt”is a real-world lab at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Its goal is to work with residents, city administration, policymakers, businesses, and local associations and organizations to initiate, test, and exemplify the transition toward greater sustainability. To this end, Karlsruhe’s Oststadt serves as a model experimental space for future-oriented solutions. The Quartier Zukunft research team supports, coordinates, and guides sustainability activities in the neighborhood through scientific inquiry. More info in the video
What is a real-world lab?
Sustainability experiments take place in a real-world lab. Here, researchers and local stakeholders work closely together to initiate, test, and promote sustainable development and a culture of sustainability. The knowledge gained about implementation possibilities is intended to be made available for use in other areas and contexts (model character). Learn more about the real-world laboratory
Where is the Quartier Zukunft located?
The project area for Quartier Zukunft is Karlsruhe’s Oststadt. In addition to its proximity to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the diversity and complexity of community life in the neighborhood are key factors: urbanistically and spatially, the area features a wide variety of structures. People from diverse backgrounds and with varied lifestyles come together here. Karlsruhe’s Oststadt becomes a dense microcosm that makes complex interrelationships and big questions manageable on a small scale.
What is the Zukunftsraum?
The “Future Space for Sustainability and Science” (in German Zukunftsraum) is located in the heart of Karlsruhe’s Oststadt and serves as a meeting place, gathering spot, and workshop for everyone from the worlds of academia and practice. Seminars, workshops, lectures, and swap parties are held here regularly. Learn more about the Future Space
What are the opening hours of Zukunftsraum?
You’re welcome to visit the Future Space during opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The address is: Rintheimer Straße 46, 76131 Karlsruhe

What is the Karlsruhe Transformation Center for Sustainability and Cultural Change (KAT)?
The KAT operates the real-world lab “Quartier Zukunft – Labor Stadt” as well as various local and nationwide research and transformation projects. As an institution, its work operates at the intersection of science and society by imparting knowledge in a participatory manner and developing expertise for social change. The institutional background of the KAT is provided by the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Learn more about the KAT
