Jürgen Kopfmüller, Anna König, Volker Stelzer
Lecture and Discussion
Jürgen Kopfmüller (ITAS) presents the Integrative Concept of Sustainable Development (IKoNE), which was developed in the early 2000s as a scientifically grounded sustainability concept and an alternative to other concepts existing at the time. The presentation focuses on the motivation, core idea, and architecture of IKoNE, its positioning within key controversies of the conceptual sustainability debate, a comparison with the SDGs, and fundamental aspects of valid sustainability analyses and assessments.
Anna König and Volker Stelzer (ITAS/KAT) provide brief insights into the practical application of the concept: They present a tool for assessing the sustainability of municipal measures based on IKoNE, as well as a "best practice" seminar that illustrates the use of IKoNE in higher education teaching.

Gertraud Klemm
Gertraud Klemm outlines her critique of the patriarchy and potential ways to overcome it, placing special emphasis on issues of sustainability. Following a conversation with Oliver Parodi (KAT), the audience is invited to engage with the author regarding her analysis of the present day and her provocative theses.
Book Description:
The showdown of the Anthropocene seems imminent: against a backdrop of climate crisis and war, a handful of power-drunk, unscrupulous politicians—in league with ruthless tech billionaires—threaten to drive the world to ruin. What do all these figures, wielding unprecedented global influence, have in common? Without exception, they are men. Ignoring this "white elephant" in the room renders all activism futile; for it is not humanity that has the Earth in a stranglehold, but the patriarchy. Overcoming it would mean tackling the most severe global problems head-on and in unison. Until recently, slavery, racism, colonialism, and imperialism seemed to have "no alternative," yet they were largely confronted and dismantled because they were exposed for what they were: injustices unworthy of the human species. Why shouldn't we succeed in doing the same with the patriarchy? More

The "Gemeinwohl-Ökonomie (GWÖ)" is a step towards an ethical market economy whose goal is not the accumulation of financial capital, but rather a good life for all. It implements human dignity, human rights, and ecological responsibility as common good values, also within the economy. A core element of the GWÖ is the "Gemeinwohl-Bilanz", which is created using the "Gemeinwohl-Matrix". This allows companies to demonstrate their contributions to the common good.
The Karlsruhe regional group supports citizens, municipalities, and businesses in implementing the "Gemeinwohl-Ökonomie" in our region.

The site, formerly used as a show garden and covering approximately 5,700 square meters, was made available for community gardening by the city of Karlsruhe in 2022. In addition to preserving the existing structures, the site offers numerous opportunities for horticultural use and more. A natural pond is a particular highlight.
In January 2024, the association "Mitmach-Garten Ostring e.V." was founded by people interested in urban gardening, biodiversity, and social interaction, and who are committed to ecological and sustainable management. Some of our members have extensive gardening knowledge, while others have less; our shared focus is on natural gardening practices.
Our community garden on Ostring is a vibrant place for encounters, culture, and experiencing nature, where people of all ages and backgrounds garden together, learn, and exchange ideas. Working together in the garden is what defines our association, and the willingness to participate is very important to us. We carry out activities together, such as mowing the meadows or building a comfortable seating area for shared breaks.
Regular meetings are held for planning and coordination. Anyone interested is warmly invited to learn more and get involved.
