Getting through the heat better together

Your opinion counts: Survey on protective measures in Karlsruhe

Summers are getting hotter – even in Karlsruhe’s neighborhoods. This makes it all the more important to work together to find solutions that make daily life in our neighborhoods livable, even during heat waves. The “My Neighborhood in the Heat” survey is aimed specifically at residents of Karlsruhe’s Oststadt and nearby neighborhoods.

As part of the ICN project “WinK” (Paths to Inclusive Climate Justice), we’re currently working to better prepare our neighborhood for heat, conduct the implementation of simple protective measures, and strengthen community and mutual support. Together with the Bürgerverein Oststadt e.V., we’ve created a short survey.

Zur Umfrage

We want to hear from you: Do you have any problems related to the heat? Where do you go to cool off on hot summer days? What can we do to get through the heat comfortably?

We’re interested in your honest opinions and experiences. The results will be included in the research project in an anonymous form.

The survey is anonymous and consists of three short questions. We look forward to your participation!

More information about WinK

The climate crisis is leading to increasing heat stress in cities, which disproportionately affects socially disadvantaged people. Therefore, it is essential to develop heat adaptation measures in a way that contributes to the well-being of all people and reduces – rather than exacerbates – social inequalities arising from the interlinkage of categories such as gender, age, ethnicity, or economic status – but rather reduce them, and do not run counter to the target of climate protection.

The target of the project is to develop, test, evaluate, and improve heat adaptation measures at the neighborhood level within the “Innovation Ecosystem for Intersectional Climate Justice” in collaboration with marginalized groups, in a way that reduces social inequality and contributes to sustainability in cities and communities.

The participating city administrations can integrate the results of the real-world experiments directly into their heat action plans and thereby institutionalize them, enabling the cities to involve “new” stakeholders in their climate adaptation strategies. In addition, comparing the two neighborhoods fosters learning among all stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem.
